How To Keep Fit While You’re Travelling

Keeping fit while travelling isn’t always easy. When you’re away on holiday, exploring a new place, the last thing you want to be doing is spending hours and hours in a gym or whipping out your phone to track your macros.

Luckily, there are ways you can keep fit while travelling that won’t get in the way of you having a good time.

'Minimal input, maximum results'

When you want to keep fit but also don’t want to miss valuable sunbathing time, ‘minimal input, maximum results’ is your new training motto.

If you fancy a quick gym sesh, full body, compound exercises (squats, deadlift and bench press for example) are a great option as they work multiple muscle groups at once. Working multiple muscle groups means more calories being burnt. Winning.

If you don’t have access to a gym, no worries!

You can smash out a killer HIIT circuit in only 20 minutes, which will get your heart rate up and burn calories. Take a look at some of our HIIT circuit inspiration here

If you want to push yourself a little more, grab yourself a resistance band. Not only are they super practical when you’re on the go, but they will also help take your training to the next level. Check out this lower body workout you can do using only a resistance band.

Get out and explore

Compound exercises, HIIT circuits… they’re all well and good but let’s be honest, not everyone wants to think about working out when they’re away. Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to keep fit. Simply getting up and going for a walk can help you burn a few extra calories and is a great way to make the most of your time in a new country.

If you want to get more physical, why not try your hand at a hike. Check out some of our recommendations here

Take a dip

If you’re heading to the beach (or are lucky enough to have bagged a hotel with a pool), going for a swim is a great way to keep fit. If you really want to throw yourself in the deep end, why not try out some water sports. You’ll usually find plenty of activities from kayaking to volleyball available on lots of beaches.

Be mindful about your eating

Travelling is an excellent opportunity to sample new foods, and you don’t want to miss out on the chance because you’re worried about making sure it fits in your macros.

However, if you do want to make sure you’re not overeating, there are ways you can get the best of both worlds. If there are a few things you want to try, why not split dishes with the person you’re with! Or, you could always make small swaps. Switching chips for new potatoes, for example, means you can still enjoy your meal and save on the extra calories. After all, you can get chips back at home…

Stay hydrated

You know the drill: HYDRATION IS KEY (and nope we don’t mean ordering another cheeky Cosmopolitan). It is recommended that we consume at least 2.5L of water a day, and this becomes all the more necessary if you’re in hot climates where you’re likely to be sweating a lot more.

If you’re out and about or chilling by the pool, make sure you always have a bottle of water on hand, so you don’t get dehydrated.

Enjoy yourself

Last but not least, enjoy yourself.

While it is important to take care of yourself and stay fit and healthy, you don’t want to get so stressed out about it that you forget to make the most of your travels. If you want to treat yourself to an ice cream or another cocktail, go for it!

Travelling is an incredible opportunity for personal develop and to explore and learn about new cultures – if this means skipping leg day, don’t worry, you’re forgiven.
